Traveling to Portugal With a Soy Allergy

In Portugal, soy is often found as a “hidden” allergen in many sauces, soups, and dips. While it may not be a main ingredient or something obvious, it can easily be added to these types of dishes, especially when you are looking at restaurants that are replacing other ingredients to make a dish dairy free, vegan, or gluten free.

Since it is at times a “hidden” allergen, sometimes restaurant staff aren’t as familiar with all of the places that soy could be in a meal. That’s why researching, communicating with chefs, and asking for allergen information and protocols is key. If you have questions about a specific menu item, be sure to ask in order to narrow down your options for soy free meals.

Soy can also be found in marinades for different meats and dishes, so keep that in mind and always be sure to double-check for this when planning restaurants to visit. There are many farm to table fresh dishes, such as fish, meat, and vegetables, so be sure to ask for this as an option. For those with soy as a standalone allergy, it’s definitely more straightforward and less challenging to navigate than those with soy and multiple other allergies. However, no matter your allergens, it’s always important to ask detailed questions about ingredients, cross-contamination risks, and kitchen and food allergy protocols.

Tips for Soy Free Portugal Travel

When traveling to Portugal with a soy allergy, be sure to always ask questions about how a dish is prepared, even if it seems soy free. Ask about sauces, dips, marinades, add-ins, and cooking methods to ensure there is no soy hidden in the dish or risk of cross-contamination.

It’s best to stick to meals with fresh, whole foods and ingredients, such as grilled meats, fish, vegetables, and fresh fruits that are free of marinades, sauces, and dips containing soy ingredients.

Always bring a food allergy chef card in Portuguese to communicate your allergen and needs clearly with restaurant staff and chefs. This is also helpful when shopping in grocery stores to identify items that contain soy.

It’s important to know a couple key phrases in Portuguese when communicating your soy allergy, such as:

  • Soy – soja.
  • Soy-free – sem soja.

If you don’t feel comfortable eating breakfast at a hotel, especially if it’s buffet-style only, then you may consider booking your own accommodation so you can prepare breakfast and do some of your own cooking. This can be especially helpful if you are navigating multiple allergies.

Soy Free Portugal Meal Ideas

With these considerations and tips for eating soy free in Portugal in mind, let’s take a look at some delicious soy free meal ideas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

Breakfast

If soy is your only allergen, most breakfast items will likely be soy free, such as eggs, fruit, and bacon. However, it’s always important to ask about cross-contamination, especially at hotel buffets. If it is a buffet-style breakfast, ask the hotel staff if you can order a la carte items to be brought from the back to accommodate your soy allergy and avoid cross contamination.

Pastries, breads, and more can have the risk of soy or cross-contamination, so always ask questions ahead of time and again upon arriving. Acai bowls are very popular in many cafes in Portugal and are also soy free.

Soy milk can be an option in many coffee shops, especially as a dairy alternative, so be diligent when ordering there. One idea is to order a cold drink such as a shot of espresso over ice with regular milk or oat milk to stay away from cross-contamination of soy milk in the frother. A simple black coffee or shot of espresso is also an option.

Lunch

When it comes to eating lunch in Portugal, there are a ton of simple and fresh options that can be made soy free with minimal to no modifications. While Portugal is known for its delicious sandwiches, such as Bifanas and Francesinha, these dishes contain bread, marinades, and sauces, which are all red flags for potential soy ingredients. Keep in mind that the more complicated the dish is (such as a sandwich with marinated meat, lots of toppings, bread, and sauce), the more likely it is that soy can pop up as an ingredient, so always double-check. Aim for dishes such as grilled meat and fish, meat or fish stews, and rice dishes, such as Arroz de Pato

Dinner

Similar to lunch, when eating dinner in Portugal, aim for simple, fresh, and grilled dishes, like fish, seafood, meat dishes, meat and vegetable stews, or rice dishes. Watch out for marinades on meats or vegetables for the addition of soy. Stay away from fried dishes in order to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Bacalhau is a tasty codfish dish that can be prepared without soy. Again, ask about soy as an ingredient in a marinade, sauce, or add-in to be sure.

Pastel de Nata is an iconic Portuguese dessert option, and if made traditionally with flour, butter, eggs, cinnamon, and sugar, it is generally soy free. Be sure to ask about ingredients and cross-contamination before indulging to ensure soy isn’t added.
